Catching Problems Early
When you get a cleaning at Horizons Dental, we will also make sure your x-rays are up-to-date. These images help us catch early signs that you’re developing a dental issue. X-rays can help us identify the following:- Decay or infection in tooth roots.
- Erupting wisdom teeth or other impacted teeth.
- Small areas of decay that may not otherwise be easy to see.
- Decay underneath previous fillings.
- Bone loss or change.
Oral Hygiene
Preventative dentistry also means that we help you develop good oral hygiene habits. Going to the dentist twice a year for a professional cleaning is the first step toward great oral hygiene. Here are some other ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy:- Brush twice daily. Brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day—in the morning and at night—is a key way to keep your teeth and gums at their healthiest. You can use an electric toothbrush or a manual one; what is important is that you clean each tooth carefully while being gentle on your gums.
- Floss daily. Flossing is also crucial to avoid bacteria buildup and decay. It’s recommended that you floss at least once a day, though you can also floss more. Make sure you follow the curve of your tooth to get any trapped food and be gentle so as not to irritate your gums.
- Get fluoride treatments. Fluoride treatments are available at Horizons Dental and help prevent cavities and other decay. The fluoride coats the surface of your teeth, making them more resistant to decay. You can also use toothpaste with fluoride to further protect your teeth.
- Avoid certain foods. There are some foods that increase your risks of getting cavities or developing other oral health problems. Foods or beverages that are overly sugary or acidic and foods that get stuck in your teeth—like candy, soda, wine, coffee, nuts, or sticky foods—should be avoided.
- Avoid tobacco. Tobacco is a common cause of serious gum disease, oral cancer, tooth decay, and other oral health problems. It can also stain your teeth, making them turn yellow. Avoid using any tobacco products like cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and cigars. This will help keep your teeth and gums healthy!
